I rebuke you!

Is it wrong of me to be extremely amused and yet saddened by the psycho-Christian Marguerite Perrin on Trading Spouses? First of all, if she applied to be on the show, she must have had some sort of clue about what the deal was, taking two very different mothers and swapping them for a few days. Granted, being from the Bible-belt, she probably doesn’t have any experience with any other religion other than her particular flavor of monotheism. However, the sheer insanity and downright ignorance of the woman amazed me. I can understand not believing in the same things that her host-family believes in, however, she displayed an ever-increasing amount of intolerance as the two episodes went on, climaxing with her “I’m a God-warrior!” fit when she returned home. The host family went out of their way to make her comfortable, saying grace, going to church, listening to her religious lectures on how they were all in dire need of being saved, and yet wouldn’t even listen to a single thing that the family tried to tell her about their own beliefs.

And then she had the nerve to tell the other mother that she was forced to do all this evil stuff because the husband was pushing all her buttons and getting her angrier and angrier until they all went to the church. I love how this particular breed of Christian (the psycho “save as many of the heathens as possible!” Bible-thumping fundies) can bend anything to suit their needs at that particular time. A guy asks how something that her God created could be evil, and suddenly he’s going hand in hand with the devil. When her eldest daughter gets knocked up at 14 (or however old she was) and nevermind that the daughter is having premarital sex and the kid is a fatherless bastard, we’re opening a dance studio.

Most amusing? Her cries of “They had a big star!” Egads, woman, the sun is a big star, is she afraid of that as well? Well that, and the shredding of the $50,000 check/letter, only to accept it after careful consideration.

  1. Like a car crash, I couldn’t look away no matter how repulsed I was. I felt so sorry for Marguerite’s kids and granddaughter. Oh man, and do I ever feel sorry for the people of that town in Louisiana where she lives. Not the best ambassador for them or for Christians in general, eh?

  2. Crystal says:

Car crash definitely describes it – I can’t stand most reality TV other than Survivor, and even I tuned into those two episodes. Someone elsewhere brought up a good point as well – Marguerite’s friends who came over for lunch weren’t much different than her, shunning the New Agey mother for the day and not including her in anything.

I’d like to be able to just keep telling myself that it’s just that group, and that the entire south isn’t like that, and not all Christians are like that, but when that’s all you ever see to form your opinions on, what are we supposed to think? Behind every stereotype is a bunch of folks who fit it, no matter how horrible and degrading it may be.

  3. The Wise Owl says:

It is sad to say, but most of the south is like that. I live in Arkansas and most of the small towns are full of people just like Marguerite Perrin. I have started a group about her on Myspace. Feel free to join.

What’s even sadder is all the people talking about this crazy bitch. myself included. LOL

  5. Raisha Bregail says:

What upset me was how her children were. They were scared of her and when they tried defending their actions, Ashley saying how she had prayed her mother, Margie bit her head off.
It’s women like that which are an embarrassment to the Christian religion.

  6. Maurice says:

Yea I am a Christian…but you hit the nail on the head when you said she is one of those save as many heathens as possible. I laughed and held my head down all at the same time. She is a tad bit extreme. And I feel sorry for doing that to her family on national television now it will take years to live that down.

  7. blogenfreude says:

It is NEVER wrong to be amused by this sort of stuff. I had a post that referenced her today … I hit the technorati tag to see if anyone else had a “god warrior” tag and this post came up. Remember … when you saw her, you looked squarely in the face of Bush’s base. Be VERY afraid …

@Bridget Unnel – Marguerite Perrin may be a Christian, but her behavior does not represent all Christian’s. She is a lady who needs prayer and help. Christian’s can be afflicted with emotional/mental illnesses, just like non believer’s. Once she receives the help she needs she could then live a “balanced” life with “balanced” healthy behaviors. I just read that her daughter passed away in a car accident. That is incredibly sad and again Marguerite and her family need our prayers. It saddens me that non believers are commenting all over the internet saying things like “If thats how Christians act, I don’t want to be one” because that is a terrible injustice. Believing in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is a wonderful thing, and living by the word of God is a wonderful thing that should not be tainted by things such as the trading spouses show. The creators of that show exploited Marguerite and her family and that is dispicable. So, Marguerite, please get help and become balanced and healthy, which will allow you to live as God intends you to.

@Andrea – I think the point being made by most of us was that while the great majority of Christians may not be like Perrin, there are plenty of them who actually are like that (I’ve worked with at least 2 of them; I  being saved by a god I don’t believe in). I’m sure everyone can agree that having a faith system that you can actually believe in and live by is a great thing, but when a person’s beliefs start to affect another person’s happiness/well being, that’s where most people will draw the line.

  9. Andrea says:

Crystal- I hear what you’re saying and I can appreciate the point you’re trying to make. I am hoping the point that I’m trying to make will be equally understood. I too have come across people who say they are Christians, but their behavior does not demonstrate that. It’s called “talking the talk, and not walking the walk.” It takes place in all faiths, as well as other area’s of life, such as politics, various positions of authority, etc. I guess it’s a “human condition.” But I have encountered and personally know many people who say they are Christians and actually live their lives in every way, which demonstrates that. These are people of integrity, high moral character and standards. They make a difference in the world. They read Gods word and do not re-interpret it to fit their standards. They actually live according to biblical, scriptural principles. Doing this takes dedication and commitment, but it is also a wonderful life. I hope people like Marguerite Perrin, and other misguided individuals like her, will come to understand that they cannot say they are Christians and have behaviors which will in any way influence non believers to think negatively of ALL Christians. They should instead demonstrate behavior and live a life that makes others think “wow, I want what they have!” If people read the bible and really get to know Jesus and understand who He was/Is, it will no doubt impact their lives in a positive way. I understand what you are saying about drawing the line when others try to push their beliefs onto you. I would say this is appropriate in every situation, if that persons views are completely irrational and every shade of wrong. But a “mature Christian” for example Billy Graham, Joyce Meyer, Joel Olsteen and many others would never come across that way. Finatics exist everywhere, in politic’s, business, etc., but it must be understood that “Religion” and “Spirituality” are two very different things. Religion is “man made” and is what comprises most cults. Christianity and other forms of healthy spirituality are important to a persons development and should be nutured not stifled. So, to those who have seen Marguerite Perrin’s behavior, or others who may give Christianity at bad name, keep an open mind and take a look at Christians who demonstrate mature, healthy, balanced spirituality before you make a decision.
